This appears to have been the principal coinage of the faction opposed to the return of Sulla to Rome. Balbus strikes as praetor by special decree of the Senate (senatus consulto) and the type anticipates the success of the anti-Sulla cause, a hope which was to be dashed in the battle of the Colline Gate.
